AS PLASTIC BAG BAN NEARS, TOPS PARTNERS WITH LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS TO HELP EDUCATE COMMUNITY
Williamsville, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets, who has more than three quarters of its stores in New York State, is less than one week away from no longer providing plastic bags to its shoppers due to newly passed legislation banning the use of plastic bags. While Tops has been providing its shoppers with a wide variety of bags for its shoppers to choose from, from jute and reusable to canvas and paper, long before the plastic bag ban was a glimmer in anyone’s eye, the locally owned and operated grocer felt it was important to educate its customers on the environmental impact of the new legislation set to take effect March 1, 2020.

“At Tops, social responsibility and sustainability have always been at the core of the company’s mission, said Kathy Sautter, public and media relations manager for Tops Friendly markets. “Tops upholds standards that ensure that we reduce environmental waste and energy consumption while providing our customers with sustainably sourced, high-quality products. But being responsible environmental corporate citizens goes beyond the products on the shelves or even the actions we take behind the scenes. It’s also about the education we provide our customers and that’s why we’ve chosen to partner with our local municipalities to better inform our consumers about the impact the New York State plastic bag ban will have on the environment to help you, the consumer better understand the changes at hand.”

Throughout the month of March at select Tops locations (noted below and across the chains footprint), Tops will be welcoming such organizations as The City of Buffalo and the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning to not only educate customers about the positive environmental impact of using reusable bags, but provide FREE reusable bags to shoppers who visit theses Tops Markets locations noted below. (Bags available while supplies last.)

“The City of Buffalo is pleased to partner with Tops Friendly Markets in educating City residents on ways to reduce their reliance on plastic bags as new law comes into effect,” said Mayor Brown. “I recently launched the Recycling Reinvented campaign to address the Top 4 contaminants in the City’s Green Recycling Totes and plastic bags are #1. We want to help our residents correct these issues and recycle right. Our city is quickly becoming an environmental leader—and better recycling is an important step on that journey.”

Erie County, as a member of the BYO Coalition (BYOC), has been and encouraging residents to bring their own bags by handing out and helping those interested to make a “T-shirt bag”. “This upcycling project takes unwanted t-shirts and with some simple cutting and tying, makes them in reusable and washable cloth bags,” said Gary Carrel, solid waste recycling specialist for Erie County. “Protecting our waterways from plastic bag pollution is one of the many reasons for this ban. Erie County has been a leader in protecting our Great Lakes for decades and prior to its involvement with the BYOC, the County worked to reduce plastic pollution through its local ban on microbeads, which ultimately helped to create the impetus for a federal law.” Representatives will be available at the sites noted below to answer questions and hand out information and provide a limited number of t-shirt bags.
