Williamsville, N.Y. – With the March 1st plastic bag ban deadline looming, shoppers are stocking up on their reusable bags, but the biggest challenge we hear from customers seems to lie in remembering to actually bring them into the store when they shop. So what happens if you forget? Well, there really is no need to worry! There are always brown bags available for just 5 cents (with a portion of the proceeds going back to local charitable partners) and if you happen to live and shop in Lancaster/Depew, NY, you might even be the lucky recipient of what Tops is calling positively paper bags from the students at William Street School.

The Good Citizens’ Club at William Street School in Lancaster, NY has decided that this month’s project was going to be to spread a little goodwill by way of Tops Friendly Markets brown paper shopping bags. One of the Good Citizens’ Club organizers and fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Heer, said that when the students were thinking about current issues that would be of interest to their group and the community at large, the topic of paper versus plastic bags came up. The club then decided to team up with its local Tops located at 4777 Transit Rd. in Depew who donated 200 brown bags for the students to decorate with positive messages like smile, have a great day, and thanks for saving me, with images of mother earth.

“We think this is a wonderful way to spread goodwill, positivity, and simply to brighten someone’s day,” said Kathy Sautter, public and media relations manager for Tops Friendly Markets. “For months people have been anxiously awaiting the change from plastic to reusable and paper bags and to be able to receive a heartfelt message from the students at William School on your paper bag shows the optimism of this movement.”

The Good Citizens’ Club is open to both fifth and sixth graders and is done via an application process. In order to allow the maximum number of students to participate the group holds two sessions; one in the spring and one in the fall. ###
