Williamsville, N.Y. – Memorial Day is just around the corner and at Tops we’re ready to reconnect with summertime favorites! It’s time to fire up the grill and enjoy some savory smokehouse hot dogs, break out those berries that are bursting with flavor that we’ve been waiting all winter long for and relax with a cold beverage as we honor those who have so honorably served our country.

While Memorial Day weekend tends to be viewed as the unofficial kickoff to summer, we remind and encourage you to take a moment to pause and reflect on the significance of this holiday. In all of our stores, Tops will be also observing a moment of silence at 3:00 pm. Here are some important Memorial Day facts as a way of paying tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice:

• This year marks the 152nd year that the United States will be celebrating this time honored tradition. • Memorial Day did not become an official Federal holiday however until 1971. • Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. • Memorial Day was initially called Decoration Day following the Civil War. It was called this by General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, because it did not honor any one particular battle. • In 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.
