TOPS RETIRES 3,000 FLAGS DURING RETIREMENT CEREMONY CONCLUDING STARS FOR OUR TROOPS PROGRAM | |
What: Tops will be retiring 3,000 worn and tattered flags that were donated at its stores over the course of the past year as it formally concludes its 2019-2020 Stars for Our Troops Program. Why: Tops Friendly Markets launched its Stars for Our Troops program in June 2019 welcoming the community to donate their worn and tattered flags at 33 Tops locations across its three state imprint. In just two week’s time, over 3,000 flags were collected! From there the cantons from 500 embroidered flags were removed and laundered (thanks to a partnership with Colvin Cleaners), 25,000 stars were properly removed, and lastly, thanks to the help of volunteers from People Inc., the stars were packaged with the following statement: "I am part of our American flag that has flown over the USA. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten. Over the past year over 13,000 stars have been presented to first responders, Veterans in VA Hospitals, nursing homes, and on Honor Flight Missions and to active duty military personnel through Blue Star Mom’s organizations and in our stores.
