4TH ANNUAL TOPS FOOD FOR FAMILIES CAMPAIGN ALIGNS PERFECTLY WITH GIVING TUESDAY
Williamsville, N.Y. – Giving Tuesday, celebrated in the US on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, encourages acts of generosity during the holidays. Being celebrated this year on Tuesday, December 1, Tops is encouraging those both shopping in store or from the comfort of their own homes to make Giving Tuesday the day they give back to their annual Food for Families Campaign.

Virtual Little Brown Bags of Hope are available for purchase online by simply visiting https://www.topsneighborshelpingneighbors.com/ so no matter what the weather, a donation can be made right from your phone, tablet, or desktop.

Even before the pandemic hit, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an estimated 13.7 million homes or 10.5% of all homes in the United States experienced food insecurity at some point during 2019. That equates to more than 35 million Americans uncertain where their next meal might come from. And it hasn’t slowed down. As a matter of fact, many of the participating food banks that will benefit from this program have indicated that the need is up more than 40%.

That is why Tops is proud to once again host its annual Food for Families Campaign with a goal to provide 2 million meals for our neighbors in need. Tops launched its Food for Families campaign November 8 and it will run thru December 26, 2020.

Tops Food for Families campaign is synonymous with The Little Brown Bag of Hope. Customers can easily purchase a Little Brown Bag of Hope paper icon at the register anytime they shop. At the register customers, will be asked if they want to support the campaign by buying a $5, $10, and/or $20 bag for someone in need in our community or to round up their change. Little Brown Bags which are filled with nutritious items that will help families extend their meal planning, can also be purchased at any self-scan register as well.

“Thanks to Tops Friendly Markets for conducting the 2020 Food For Families campaign. The food collected through this effort will greatly assist the families in need in our community. In 2019, the Food Bank provided 16 million pounds of food to 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other charitable agencies feeding hungry people throughout the Hudson Valley,” said Molly Nicol, Interim Director, Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. “Since COVID-19 hit in mid-March, the need for food has increased 53% in our area. With the help of partners like Tops, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley has stepped up its efforts to meet this need with initiatives such as Drive-Thru Emergency food distributions, Direct Delivery to senior housing, increased Backpack food products for school children, and a Community Table program for displaced restaurant workers. We could not do the work we do without the help of community partners like Tops!”
