TOPS & FLASHFOOD CELEBRATE EARTH DAY BY ANNOUNCING 17 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD DIVERTED FROM LANDFILLS | |
Williamsville, N.Y. – What started out as a small step toward reducing their carbon footprint has blossomed into quite the environmental impact. Not even a year has elapsed since Tops Friendly Markets has partnered with the Canadian based Flashfood company yet in that time this partnership has helped to divert food from landfills, reduce environmental waste and energy consumption, all while providing Tops customers with sustainably soured high-quality products at a great value. To date the partnership has helped Tops • Feed over 223,642 shoppers • Divert more than 17,122,324 lbs. of food from landfills and • Save 8,112,113 km worth of CO2 “When people think of climate change, they think of cars and planes and factories. They don't realize what a massive contributor food waste is to our warming planet,” said Josh Domingues, Flashfood CEO. “This Earth Day, we’re thrilled to be celebrating our partnership with Tops, a leader in environmental stewardship and responsible practices.” Now located at 33 of its stores since its most recent expansion of the program throughout Western New York, Mid-State and the Hudson Valley Region, Flashfood is an innovative and interactive in-store food waste program that allows customers to purchase food nearing its sell-by date. Items like produce, meat, deli, bakery, and dairy, may be listed at up to 50 percent off on the Flashfood app and then is available for pick up at one of the designated Tops Friendly Market locations. How Flashfood works is Tops will post flash sales of its surplus food items on the mobile Flashfood app available on Google Play or the Apple Store. Shoppers can search and purchase food directly on the app and then collect their purchased items at the designated Flashfood area at Tops! It’s a win for the store, the shopper, and the environment! “We are always working on ways to leverage technology to create a better shopping experience for our customers,” said Ed Rick, director, consumer marketing & digital for Tops. “Since launching Flashfood last year we have seen a marked increase in its use by our customers.” The program is available at the following 33 Tops Markets locations: 12775 Broadway, Alden, NY 2351 Maple Rd., Amherst, NY 3035 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst, NY 3500 Main St., Amherst, NY 390 W.
