Buffalo, NY - Tops Markets announced today that it will close six underperforming stores in its Ohio market in order to remain competitive with its 49 remaining Ohio stores. The stores are spread throughout Northeast Ohio, including the cities of Cleveland and Akron (see attached list). We remain committed to the Ohio market and are taking these steps in order to strengthen our market position, overall, stated Max Henderson, executive vice president and general manager of Tops Markets.

The six stores employ approximately 390 associates, but Tops has yet to determine how many will actually be laid-off as a result of the closings due to factoring in retirement and attrition factors.

In addition, Tops will make some operational improvements in most of its remaining Ohio stores to ensure that they are meeting their customers needs while achieving financial objectives. Customers may see some changes in department structure and operational hours, as well.

Tops continues to invest in its stores, having introduced a new prototype in the Ohio market approximately one year ago. The new prototype was the footprint for the chains newest stores in North Tonawanda and Perinton, New York and will also be used for the major remodeling of its Maple-Bailey store in Amherst scheduled to open later this spring. In addition, two replacement stores are scheduled to open later this year in Dunkirk and Derby, New York.
