Awarded to associates in memory of Tops Markets Co-Founder

BUFFALO, NY - Tops Markets today announced the recipients of the 2005 Armand J. Castellani Outstanding Achievement Awards. Jack Barrett and Charlene Craven were each honored for their contributions and achievements with the Tops organization. In addition, Paul Perna was posthumously awarded in recognition of his work and leadership throughout his association with Tops.

For the past three years, The Armand J. Castellani Outstanding Achievement Awards have been presented to those Tops associates who have made a significant and lasting contribution and whose sense of worth is measured less by their own achievements and more by what they have enabled others to realize. Each award is given in memory and honor of Tops Markets Co-Founder and Executive Armand J. Castellani, who passed away in January 2002.

"Armand Castellani's contributions and dedication to Tops, his family and the community exemplified the highest qualities for leadership and commitment to others," stated Max T. Henderson, executive vice president and general manager, Tops Markets. "In their time with Tops, Jack, Charlene and Paul each have exhibited a passion and commitment to not only the business and our customers, but toward fellow associates as well."

Jack Barrett has been with the Tops family since 1968, working in the human resources department and labor relations. Mr. Barrett currently serves as senior vice president of labor relations and associate relations. Through his 37 years at Tops, he has been a true inspirational leader and mentor to many associates.

Since 1977, Charlene Craven has been with the Tops organization. Working her way up from Office Manager in Elmira, she moved on to become the first female store manager for Tops. In 1993 Charlene was named Store Manager of the Year in her district. For the past 12 years, she has held the position of district manager. She is also active in many community events, including Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Cystic Fibrosis and the American Cancer Society.

This past February, Tops lost a member of its family when Paul Perna passed away after a lengthy illness. In his 30 years with Tops, Mr. Perna served as store manager, district supervisor and finally executive vice president and co-owner of Supermarket Management, Inc., the first franchisee of Tops and remaining franchisee today. He spent much of his time in support of the community, serving on the Niagara County Community College Foundation, Lockport Rotary Club, Eastern Niagara Chamber of Commerce and Eastern Niagara United Way. Tops Markets, LLC, headquartered in Williamsville, NY is one of four retail operating companies under Ahold USA and is a division of Giant Food Stores in Carlisle, PA. Tops currently operates 152 Tops Markets and 2 Martin's Super Food Stores. With nearly 18,000 associates, Tops serves a three state market area.
