Williamsville, N.Y. – A large crowd gathered outside the Tops Friendly markets on Maple Road this morning to cheer on six teams as they competed for the coveted title of Tops Slider Showdown champions. And in true Buffalo fashion, mother nature threw our competitors a curveball. Shortly after “kickoff” down came the rain, but that didn’t spoil anyone’s spirits and only added to the flavor of the competition.

Six teams from different media outlets competed for the coveted title including: • AM Buffalo – Mercedes Wilson & Emily Lampa • Influencer – Jimmy Scott Jr. • Influencer - Sarah Carson and her husband Matt • Star 102.5 – Sue O’Neil with her husband Michael DiPasquale • WBLK – Yasmin Young • WYRK – Kadie Day and Rob Banks

All teams brought their a-game, but only one walked away with bragging rights, Tops Gift cards and goodie bag, and a $500 donation to their charity of choice. This year’s winners with their “Spot on the Bills Slider” were Sue O’Neil from Star 102.5 and her husband Michael DiPasquale. Not only do they walk away with a donation to the SPCA Serving Erie County, but Alex Dispence, better known as SupChef, surprised everyone in attendance before the winners were announced declaring he would match the $500 Tops donation to the winner’s charity!

Teams were provided with individual bags upon the start of the contest, each containing different secret core ingredients provided by our vendor partners as well as access to a pantry of additional ingredients to doctor up their creations. Each team had 20 minutes to create the most creative, tasty, eye appealing sliders, complete with a name, for the judges to rank. Our MVP judges were:

• Thurman Thomas – Retired Buffalo Bills Running Back

• SupChef – With over 1M followers, Chef Alexander Dispence knows a thing or two about making the perfect game day creations

• John Persons – President of Tops Friendly Markets

• Nicholas Picholas – Kiss 98.5 DJ and event Emcee

Runners up also received Tops gift cards and a delicious game day goodie bag.

“The healthy team competition was in high gear as soon as the clock started ticking, as one team stole an ingredient off another teams table right out of the gate” said Kathy Sautter, public and media relations manager for Tops. “Their sliders were creative, crazy, and they brought their a-game bringing secret ingredients like SPAM, secret seasonings, and even saffron from Istanbul!”
