TOPS/MARTIN'S TO MOVE PSEUDOEPHEDRINE PRODUCTS BEHIND THE PHARMACY COUNTER | |
Buffalo, NY - Tops Markets announced today that it will move single ingredient pseudoephedrine products behind their pharmacy counters at both Tops Markets and Martin's Super Food Stores in an effort to help law enforcement address the growing problem with methamphetamine production. The change will affect only those medicines containing pseudoephedrine as their sole active ingredient. Pseudoephedrine is the key precursor ingredient that can be converted into the illegal drug methamphetamine. "After careful review of numerous state legislative proposals and law enforcement bulletins, Tops and Martins made the decision to move these products behind the counter in all 115 of our pharmacies," said Denny Hopkins, vice president of advertising and public relations. "This decision was based on the need to balance the expectations of our customers who use these safe and highly effective medicines legitimately with the need to help law enforcement in their efforts to crackdown on the production of illegal methamphetamines." Tops will completely remove single ingredient pseudoephedrine products from their 37 non-pharmacy stores. Multi-ingredient products, which contain pseudoephedrine along with one or more other active ingredients, will continue to be sold on Tops store shelves. Tops Markets, LLC, headquartered in Williamsville, NY is one of four retail operating companies under Ahold USA and is a division of Giant Food Stores in Carlisle, PA. Tops currently operates 152 Tops Markets, 2 Martin's Super Food Stores. With nearly 18,000 associates, Tops serves a three state market area.
