Williamsville, NY - In the fall, all Medicare recipients must enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan in order to receive new prescription coverage. As a result of this government mandate, Tops Markets is partnering with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to help educate customers about the upcoming changes in coverage.

Taking effect on January 1, 2006, the new Medicare prescription drug coverage will be available to everyone with Medicare regardless of his or her income or how he or she receives Medicare. For people with limited income or resources, there is extra financial assistance available if their income is under $14,355 (individual) and $19,245 (couple).

Responding to CMS' requests to pharmacy providers to help make Medicare beneficiaries aware of the new prescription coverage, Tops has committed to train their pharmacists to help inform pharmacy customers who, for the first time, will be eligible for Medicare prescription drug coverage next year. Printed information will be available at any Tops pharmacy.

"Partnerships like this are critical. Seniors and people with a disability place a great deal of trust in their pharmacist, so it is vital that Medicare work with valued partners such as Tops to make sure all Medicare beneficiaries can make the most of the drug coverage available in 2006," said CMS administrator Mark B. McClellan, M.D., PhD.
