Williamsville, N.Y. – Looking to start the new year by saving money on groceries while making a positive environmental impact? Many Tops locations in Rochester are part of the Flashfood network – an app that allows shoppers to browse high-quality food for up to 60% off. Browse in the app and pick them up in store. At Tops alone, Flashfood users have saved more than $3.7 million on their groceries and diverted more than 1.4 million pounds of waste from landfills.

Tops first piloted the Flashfood program at six stores back in August of 2020 and within a year the program quickly expanded to include 44 locations. Today you can find the Flashfood program in 68 Tops locations across Western New York with shoppers expressing rave reviews:

“I use Flashfood for an elderly shut-in. The variety and quality obtained is so greatly appreciated. The store clerks are always helpful. The best part is seeing the smile on my friend’s face when I deliver it to her and share a meal or just coffee and dessert. Keep up the great work!”

“Thank you Tops for participating in this program. I actually eat healthier now because I buy more fruits and vegetables because of the app.”

“So glad a year or so ago, I finally asked what Flashfood was. I so appreciate having this option. I am able to sample new food options, as well as saving on all purchasing. Thank You All!”

“Part of Tops’ core mission is eradicating hunger and Flashfood is an innovative tool that allows us to provide quality product at a discounted price helping with the bottom line, all while diverting it from landfills,” said Jeff Culhane, Senior Vice President, Merchandising for Northeast Shared Services, the parent company of Tops Friendly Markets. “The continuous expansion of the program additionally helped further our mission of reducing our carbon footprint as well.”

With continued inflation challenges, food insecurity continues to impact families across North America, especially families in New York, where one in six children face hunger (Feeding America). Shoppers have turned to Flashfood to save up to 60% off high-quality items either in surplus or nearing their best-by date, such as meats, bakery, dairy, seafood, and fresh produce. Shoppers conveniently browse and buy discounted food items directly through the Flashfood app on their mobile phone, and then simply pick up their order from the Flashfood Zone located inside their participating local Tops Friendly Market store.

“We’re so encouraged by the incredible feedback from Flashfood shoppers at Tops Friendly Markets,” said Sepideh Burkett, Head of Partner Development at Flashfood. “We were founded to reduce food waste, but more and more we’re hearing from shoppers that first and foremost we help them put nutritious food on the table, affordably. This is a mission we share with Tops Friendly Markets, and we feel so optimistic about the year ahead.”

Across North America, Flashfood has diverted over 90 million pounds of food and saved shoppers over $200 million dollars on groceries, helping thousands of families put affordable food on their tables.
