Tops Honors Black Run Businesses During Black History Month

Williamsville, NY – When you mention the name Anderson’s Flowers to those in the East Buffalo community, instantly the praises are sung for owner, Darius Anderson. He brought vibrancy and new life back into the community that was lacking for over 20 years when he and his daughter opened their doors to their floral shop on Fillmore Ave.

After working for another floral shop for over a quarter century he knew his calling and the smile flowers brought to people’s faces was extremely rewarding for Darius. But what he didn’t anticipate was the tremendous outpouring of support he’d feel in return. “The community was very supportive, I’ve had a lot of repeat customers and great reviews online about quality service, the beautiful arrangements, and good pricing.”

So when Tops approached Darius to be a part of the renovated Tops on Jefferson Ave. in 2022 after the tragedy, he was thrilled to be a part of something “bigger”. “This was an opportunity to be a part of something great, it was good for business, and I just wanted to be part of something that was important.” Darius’ arrangements, mixed arrangements, and bouquets brighten up the stores entrance and are selling very well, he tells a Tops spokeswoman.

“Tops is proud to partner with Darius and bring his beautiful arrangements to our store on Jefferson Ave.,” said vice president of produce and floral, Jeff Cady. “Highlighting the talents of those right here in our backyard and supporting those who are within our community is what being a good community partner is all about.”

When asked what he’s learned most after opening his doors he notes “there’s certainly been a lot of ups and down and no paychecks, but you keep the door open and lights on and hope pray for the best.” And the community is fortunate to have someone like Darius in the community who is always looking toward the future and paying it forward. After a young entrepreneur showed up on his doorstep looking for advice he took her under his wing. “It’s our job to teach them what they need to know because it’s not going to hurt our business. Keep stepping, don’t stop the step. You teach. Don’t hold back, knowledge is key.”

We’re proud to be able to support local entrepreneurs like Darius and others that we will continue to highlight during Black History Month. Be sure to pick up a beautiful bouquet this Valentine’s Day at our Jefferson Ave. store created by Anderson’s Flower Shop!
