Buffalo, NY - Tops Markets announced today the closure of its locations at 1171 Route 9 in Ticonderoga and 45 Hadjis Way in Lake Placid. Both stores will cease operations on December 30, 2005. In the interim, the stores will remain open and operate as usual.

The Ticonderoga location has been sold back to its landlord and plans for the building include the construction of a new Rite Aid location. Additionally, the Rite Aid Corporation will offer employment to Tops Pharmacists from the Ticonderoga store. Tops will continue to actively seek a buyer for the Lake Placid store, but has set the closing date for the end of the year. Tops purchased both stores from Grand Union in 2001.

Tops Markets announced last July its intent to seek buyers for its 31 stores located in Eastern New York and the Adirondack region as part of the chain's long-term strategy to redefine its core markets. Since that announcement twenty stores have been sold. C&S Wholesalers recently signed a deal for twelve stores. Price Chopper has purchased six stores and the landlords of two stores have reacquired the properties.

The remaining nine Eastern New York stores, which include locations in Norwich, Rome, Keeseville, Port Henry, Willsboro, Whitehall, New Hartford, Utica and Clinton will continue to operate until buyers can be found. Tops is currently undergoing communications and negotiations in seeking the best possible outcome to protect the value of its business and for its associates.
