Carlisle, PA - Officials from Giant Food Stores and TOPS Markets today announced their largest charitable donations ever, totaling over $21.4 million in combined cash and product contributions in 2005. The donations were given to beneficiaries of the "Living Here. Giving Here." program that includes local hunger-related organizations, Children's Miracle Network hospitals and local non-profit groups.

"We want to thank our customers, associates and our vendors for their contributions over the past year," said Tony Schiano, chief executive officer. "Giant and TOPS have long been proud supporters of local charities and food banks, and we would not be able to give back to the communities we serve without the generosity and support of our customers and associates. Efforts were stepped up in a big way in 2005 to fund Hurricane Katrina relief efforts while still meeting local community needs."

As organizations that "live here and give here," both Giant/Martin's and TOPS give back to local organizations through donations at the corporate and store levels. Here are a few of the highlights of Giant/Martin's and TOPS joint community programs in 2005:

- Regional Food Banks - Local food banks across Pennsylvania, New York, Northeast Ohio, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia received over $10.3 million in product and customer donations - including 1,680 turkeys at Thanksgiving.

- Children's Miracle Network - A golf outing held at nine golf courses in Pennsylvania and two courses in New York, along with $1 paper balloon and candle sales to customers, raised nearly $2 million to benefit local Children's Miracle Network hospitals throughout Giant/Martin's and TOPS operating areas.

- Hurricane Katrina - To aid the Gulf Coast states, Giant/Martin's and TOPS partnered with local radio stations and customers, raising a total of $745,000 for relief efforts.

- Local Schools - Through Giant's A+ School Rewards program and the TOPS Field Trip Fund, local schools received over $168,000 to fund educational programs and field trips.

Individually, Giant continues to remain active with the Multiple Sclerosis Society raising over $450,000 through participation in the 2005 MS Walk. Giant customers also were invited to "Support Our Troops" raising $75,000 toward the regional USO. TOPS Markets continues to be a proud supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, raising over half a million dollars in 2005 and regional Salvation Army units in New York and Northeast Ohio, with over $100,000 in contributions.
