11 Stores to be refurbished by end of 2006

Buffalo, NY - TOPS Markets officials and associates were joined by local community leaders today at the company's Elmwood Avenue store in the City of Buffalo to announce a $20 million capital investment at 11 of the company's stores throughout the Buffalo Niagara region. The stores will be significantly remodeled and refurbished by the end of 2006 with a multi-million investment per store including the installation of state-of-the-art technology and amenities to provide customers with a more convenient shopping experience.

"Now that we have finished the reorganization of our operations throughout the TOPS marketing area, we can turn our total focus on enhancing our operations in the Buffalo Niagara region which is the home of TOPS," said Max T. Henderson, executive vice president and general manager, TOPS Markets. "There is a reason we have recently gone back to our 'TOPS Never Stops' motto and that is to reaffirm our commitment to our customers in Buffalo and Western New York that we are and will remain an integral part of the community."

"In the City of Good Neighbors, Tops has consistently been one our greatest corporate neighbors and this announcement is further evidence of Tops' commitment to the City of Buffalo," said Mayor Byron Brown. "By investing $20 million in their local stores, including the Elmwood Avenue location in the City of Buffalo, we can look forward to increased employment through construction-related activities, an expansion of Tops associates employed locally and greater investment comprehensively in the stores" infrastructure. This is great news from a great company that has always been a great neighbor in our city."

The remodeling and refurbishments are expected to be complete at eleven stores by the end of 2006. TOPS Markets is also on track to continue its reinvestment campaign with an additional 12 to 15 locations planned to undergo similar renovations in 2007. Construction is underway at the following TOPS Markets:

- 355 Orchard Park Road, West Seneca

- 7200 Niagara Falls Boulevard, Niagara Falls

- 11170 Maple Ridge Road, Medina

- 3949 Lockport-Olcott Road, Lockport.

Construction will begin in June at TOPS Market located at 2101 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo. TOPS will announce the additional six stores slated for a major remodel in 2006 closer to the date of construction.

"We have added headcount in every store we have remodeled in the last several years and expect to do the same with these remodeled stores," added Henderson.

The extent of the remodels and the addition of new amenities and technology will vary by store. The majority of the stores will see updated bakery and deli departments, featuring upscale desserts, made-to-order specialty sandwiches, seasonal salads and hot subs.

Many customers will find an increased emphasis on health and wellness, along with the introduction of a Nature's Promise Marketplace, a "health food store within a store," offering an expanded variety of natural and organic products, including TOPS' own brand, Nature's Promise, and organic selections of produce, dairy, meat and poultry products. Located within Nature's Promise Marketplace, customers will find a variety of consumer health information in brochure form and via an easy-to-use computer kiosk. A brand-new Relax, Revive, Renew department offers a soothing decor and the effect of shopping in a specialty store for all of the customer's health and beauty needs.

As a one-stop informational center, customers can find what they are looking for at one of the Shopping Solutions kiosks. By using the interactive touch-screen, customers can place a deli order, refill a prescription, check out personal BONUSCARD savings offer and find the location of a specific item within the store. EasyShop allows customers to use a hand-held device to scan and bag items in their cart as they shop and EasyWeigh allows customers to weigh produce, bulk foods and other random weigh items.

"Today's announcement of a $20 million capital investment program is important, not only to TOPS, but to the Buffalo Niagara region," Henderson continued. "I stand here today with community leaders who are working hard to encourage economic development and investment in the region. TOPS Markets are proud to be part of the economic revival of greater Buffalo."

TOPS officials also announced its Martin's Super Food Store on Maple Road in Amherst will revert back to a TOPS Markets location beginning April 16th. Customers will receive the weekly TOPS ad and, for the first time, will be able to participate in the current Gas Extra Rewards program. In addition, the TOPS BONUSCARD will be accepted in the store along with the Martin's BONUSCARD, a major enhancement for customers in the region who shop at both Martin's and TOPS.

"While this has been a very successful Martin's store, it is clear that TOPS is a better fit for the Amherst market," Henderson said. "It makes sense that it be converted back to a TOPS Markets so that our customers have access to TOPS promotions and BONUSCARD savings. Our customers wanted their TOPS back and we listened."

The Batavia, Derby, Dunkirk and Perinton stores will remain as Martin's, but customers will find the TOPS corporate brand product on the shelves and will be able to use their TOPS BONUSCARD at these locations.
