Buffalo, NY - As we all enjoy long and languid summer days, TOPS Markets' pharmacists want to share a mid-summer reminder about safe summer fun.

"TOPS pharmacists are dedicated to providing our customers with the most up-to-date health information," noted Leigh Shirley, vice president of pharmacy at TOPS Markets. "Summer is a great time to spend outdoors, but a healthy lifestyle and taking the proper safety precautions are extra important so that the fun continues."

No matter where you go this summer, these helpful reminders are useful everywhere:

Eat foods that will boost your energy. Fresh fruits and vegetables are bountiful this season. Be careful about eating too much food high in fat and sugar, which can make you more prone to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Drink plenty of water. Avoid drinks with caffeine and alcohol, which will only dehydrate your body. Seniors and children can become dehydrated much easier than adults, so pay special attention to them.

Stay Cool. Dress in light, loose fitting clothing and be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses when outdoors. Make sure to use fans or air conditioners to reduce heat indoors whenever possible. Also, break down work and exercise activities to shorter, but more frequent periods to save your body from heat exhaustion.

Avoid being outdoors in the hottest part of the day. If you must, go out in the early morning or later evening hours when the sun is not as strong. To protect your skin from UV rays, wear sunscreen with a high SPF level. Don't forget to use a waterproof sunscreen when you are participating in activities in and around the water.

Cover skin as much as possible to protect yourself from bug bites. Bug spray is safest when applied to clothing and should be applied only to skin that is exposed. Repellents do not need to be applied heavily, just make sure that your insect repellent contains DEET, which will help to ensure the spray's effectiveness.

Be aware of your allergies! Be sure to follow your doctor's treatment guidelines, including proper use of over-the-counter medicines. Many allergy medications that contain pseudoephedrine (PSE) are now found behind the counter at your local TOPS pharmacy. If you cannot find the product you are looking for or just need some friendly advice, ask your TOPS Pharmacist for assistance.

Watch out for poison ivy and poison oak. If you are exposed, thoroughly wash the affected area as soon as possible to prevent spreading the poison sap from the plant to other parts of your body. Make sure anything worn or brought into contact with plant sap is washed or discarded to prevent the rash from spreading.

Before leaving for a trip, be sure to pack a first aid kit, along with some summertime necessities. Along with the Band-Aids, gauze pads, antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream and tweezers founding most first aid kits, calamine lotion and baking soda are great items to bring along to treat itchy bug bites. Also, don t forget to pack plenty of sunscreen and aloe lotion to sooth sunburns. A selection of allergy medicines, sunscreens, and bug repellents can be found within Your Neighborhood Drug Store at TOPS.
