Williamsville, NY - TOPS Markets is once again celebrating Black History month in a number of its stores beginning February 1 and continuing through the end of the month.

Five TOPS Markets will be participating throughout the month with special events celebrating the heritage and achievements for Black Americans. Check the following participating stores for their individual schedules of activities throughout the month:

345 Amherst Street in Buffalo

1275 Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo

1000 Portage Road in Niagara Falls

710 Lake Avenue in Rochester

285 Upper Falls Boulevard in Rochester

Display units illustrating Black History Month and highlighting the Negro League Baseball will be featured at the five stores listed above. From the 1880s to 1950, when Negro players were not allowed to play on major league baseball teams, hundreds of all-black professional and semi-professional teams played throughout the United States. This loosely organized circuit of teams were known as the "Negro League" and provided an opportunity for outstanding athletes to play for the passion of the game.

Copies of "Profiles in Excellence" will be available to customers in all TOPS Markets. The focus of this month's edition is a celebration of African-American Heritage, including profiles of influential players and manager of the Negro League Baseball. Profiles of Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, Oscar Charleston, Leroy "Satchel" Page, Walter "Buck" Leonard, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, Roy Campanella, John Jordan "Buck" O'Neil and Effa Manley will be featured. Dane Tilghman, one of the premier painters of Negro League Baseball images and African American Golf Art, painted all artwork on the display units.

In addition, associates from TOPS corporate headquarters in Williamsville will conduct a "Read-In" at Porter-D'Youville Elementary School in Buffalo on February 21. All books that are read to the students will focus on subjects related to black history.
