Williamsville, NY - Customers and associates at TOPS Markets recently came together to raise money in the fight against hunger. A total of $254,645 was raised through the annual Check Out Hunger campaign at TOPS stores in New York and Pennsylvania.

"As a provider of food to our local communities, our company's mission continues to focus on helping to eradicate hunger in those communities," said Max Henderson, Jr., executive vice president and general manager. "We kicked off this year with a bang and we hope to build on this momentum in continuing to help our local food banks fulfill their own missions of providing food to those who call for it most."

Check Out Hunger is a national, annual program run by food retailers to help raise money for local food banks. The program is especially important because donations to food banks drop dramatically after the holiday season, but the need to feed the less fortunate continues. TOPS customers were given the opportunity to donate $2, $3 or $5 at the register. The monies raised in each individual store were in turn given directly to that community's local food bank. The breakdown of donations to local food banks is as follow:

Food Bank of Western New York - $139,345

Food Link of Rochester - $87,496

Food Bank of Northwestern Pennsylvania - $3,634

Food Bank of Central New York - $3,748

Food Bank of the Southern Tier - $17,209

Central Pennsylvania Food Bank - $3,209

TOPS customers have raised almost $1.2 million in the past four years of the Check Out Hunger campaign to benefit regional foodbanks.
