Carlisle, PA - While summer doesn't officially begin until June 21, it's never too early to stock up on supplies to make your summer a safe and healthy one. Pharmacists from Giant Food Stores, TOPS Markets and Martin's Food Markets want to share a few reminders about safe summer fun.

"Summer is a great time to spend outdoors, but keeping in mind some basic safety tips and being prepared with sunscreen and plenty of liquids are extra important so the fun in the sun lasts all season long," noted Leigh Shirley, vice president of pharmacy. "Our pharmacists are a resource to customers and can provide the most up-to-date health information and summer product suggestions."

Whether this summer takes you to backyard barbecues, walks in the park or traveling to the beach, the following helpful reminders are good to keep in mind: Avoid being outdoors in the hottest part of the day. Go out in the early morning or later evening hours when the sun is not as strong. Being outdoors when the sun is at its peak between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. puts you at risk for dehydration and sunburn. Instead, find a shady spot and relax with a cold glass of water. If you feel weak, dizzy or nauseous, stop what you're doing, get out of the sun immediately and re-hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of water.

Don't forget the sunscreen! A half-hour before you leave the house, make sure to slather a sunscreen SPF 15 or higher - this allows time to absorb into your skin. For protection, a person should apply a handful of screen to their entire body. Use a waterproof sunscreen when you are participating in activities in and around water. And remember to reapply throughout the course of the day as sunscreen can wear off even if the product is waterproof. People can still get sunburned on overcast days, so be sure to put sunscreen on everyday.

Dress for the summer heat. Wear light-colored, loose fitting clothing and don't forget a hat and sunglasses when outdoors. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's energy while dark colors absorb it - making you feel even warmer.

Eat foods that will boost your energy. Fresh fruits and vegetables are bountiful this season. Be careful about eating too much food high in fat and sugar, which can make you more prone to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

Drink plenty of water. Avoid drinks with caffeine and alcohol, which will only dehydrate your body. Be sure to carry a bottle of water with you whenever you are outdoors. Seniors and children can become dehydrated much easier than adults, so pay special attention to them.

Cover as much skin as possible to protect yourself from bug bites. Bug spray is safest when applied to clothing and should be applied only to skin that is exposed. Repellents do not need to be applied heavily, just make sure that your insect repellent contains DEET, which will help to ensure the spray's effectiveness.

Be aware of your allergies! Be sure to follow your doctor's treatment guidelines, including proper use of over-the-counter medicines. Many allergy medications that contain pseudoephedrine (PSE) are now found behind the counter at your local Giant/TOPS/Martin's pharmacy. If you cannot find the product you are looking for or just need some friendly advice, ask your pharmacist for assistance.

Before leaving for a trip, be sure to pack a first aid kit, along with some summertime necessities. Along with the Band-Aids, gauze pads, antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream and tweezers found in most first aid kits, calamine lotion and baking soda are great items to bring along to treat itchy bug bites. Also, don't forget to pack plenty of sunscreen and aloe lotion to sooth sunburns.

A selection of allergy medicines, sunscreens, and bug repellents can be found within Your Neighborhood Drug Store at Giant, TOPS or Martin's. For further questions or for more information on summer safety tips, visit your local pharmacist.
