TWO TOPS STORES ARE WINNERS IN NATIONAL APPLE DISPLAY CONTEST
Williamsville, NY - Two local Tops stores received notification from the U.S. Apple Association that they are winners in the 2007 National Apple Month display contest. Tops Markets on 6150 South Park Ave in Hamburg, NY took third place in the contest, while the Tops Markets on 301 Meadow Drive in North Tonawanda, NY took ninth place.

To enter the National Apple Month Display Contest, the store had to create an attention-getting display that promoted United States Apples and apple products, Kraft Caramels, USA-grown peanuts, Smucker's peanut butter, and peanut products. The annual contest, that jump-starts the domestic apple industry's marketing season, provided retailers and the apple industry with increased sales and gave consumers easy access to great-tasting, good-for-you apples and the above mentioned partner products.

Both Tops stores submitted their entries at the end of December and were recently chosen out of approximately 900 entries nation-wide. The Hamburg store focused on an apple farm-theme and built a scaled-down barn right in the produce department. The North Tonawanda location used signage to educate shoppers on the store's diverse selection of apples. Both stores used a wide variety of locally-grown apples in their display.

Rick Wright, Tops' produce and floral manager was thrilled to hear that Tops won not just once, but twice. "We love trying new things at store level, and it pays off" he said. "The National Apple Month Display Contest allowed our produce teams to have fun, get creative and up-sell our products."

National Apple Month is the only national apple promotion conducted in the United States. Originally founded in 1904 as National Apple Week, it was expanded in 1996 to a three-month promotional window from September through November. National Apple Month's mission is to increase apple industry sales, and to enhance consumer awareness and usage of apples and apple products. Its goal is to increase apple industry sales through a fall retail display contest, food service promotional contest, and to develop strong relations with retail, foodservice and apple industry members.
