| TOPS FRIENDLY MARKETS HELPS EASE PAIN OF HIGH FUEL PRICES WITH DONATION TO MEALS ON WHEELS | |
| Williamsville, NY – Tops Friendly Markets today presented $5,000 in fuel gift cards to Meals on Wheels for Western New York to help the organization and its volunteers deal with the high cost of gasoline. In addition, Tops’ management and associates volunteered their time to assist with the midday delivery of meals to the elderly and disabled in the Buffalo area. “We realize that there are many organizations that are dependant on transporting residents, clients, and in this case, hot meals to people in need of assistance,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO. “We are very happy to help in any way we can.” The donation took place at the Tops Friendly Markets store at 1460 South Park Ave. in Buffalo. Afterward, numerous Tops associates and executives assisted with the delivery of midday meals to those in need. Each day, Meals on Wheels volunteers use 200 vehicles and travel 1,000 miles to deliver meals in the Buffalo area; nearly 840,000 meals are delivered annually. Fuel costs at recent record levels have made it difficult for many volunteers of Meals on Wheels, and the number of volunteers has dwindled. Benjamin A. Gair, III, chief executive officer, stated, “The volunteers are the heart and hands of Meals on Wheels. Their participation helps to deliver food and friendship that are essential to the well-being and independence of seniors.” In addition to the donation, Tops Friendly Markets leaders have called on their associates to consider becoming a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. “Our Tops associates are committed to volunteering in their communities throughout the year, both through Tops and in their personal lives as well,” Curci said. “They’re looking forward to helping today, and hopefully will consider Meals on Wheels as a volunteer opportunity in the future.” Tops Markets, LLC, is headquartered in Williamsville, NY and operates 71 full-service supermarkets and five franchise supermarkets.
