First Buffalo-area Store Renovation Under Capital Investment Plan

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. –Tops Friendly Markets, the leading full-service grocery retailer in Western New York, Central New York, including Rochester, and Northwestern Pennsylvania, today held a grand reopening celebration to mark the completion of a major renovation of its Village of Hamburg location. It is the first store in the Buffalo area to be renovated under Tops’ ambitious $150 million capital investment plan.

The multi-million dollar renovation of this Tops store, located at 6150 South Park Ave., provides customers with over one thousand new product offerings including expanded ethnic, chef-inspired, and natural and organic items. The renovation also includes interior improvements and an expanded product selection. The 84,900 square foot store originally opened in 1992.

“We’ve identified this specific location as the second store within our five-year capital investment and renovation plan, and first store in the Buffalo area, to receive improvements,” said Frank Curci, CEO of Tops. “The store’s new and renovated features are centered around an increased selection of products, easy navigation, and most importantly, satisfying and delighting our customers.”

Specifically, Tops has added an expanded natural and organic foods and gluten-free section, responding to a nationwide trend of consumers seeking those products. Other changes at the store include new interior décor, expanded bulk foods section, remodeled bakery department, and the addition of Red Box Video for convenient DVD rentals. In addition, Tops has replaced meat and seafood display cases, dairy and frozen food display cases, and deli/prepared food cases, which will allow the store to offer a wider variety of these products to shoppers.

The Hamburg location offers a self-serve Tim Hortons Express outlet, which serves fresh brewed coffee, select cold beverages and baked goods, and in the prepared food section are several varieties of Anchor Bar chicken wings, a local favorite. The store has also unveiled The “Hamburg BrauHaus,” where shoppers can find more than 100 varieties of local and national artisan craft beer.

“We’ve listened to our customers and now being a locally operated company, we’re better able to respond to their needs,” said Mark Mendola, manager of the Hamburg Tops. “We’re offering shoppers an enhanced in-store experience, paying special attention to convenience, quality, variety and an overall great value.”

In addition, Tops placed an emphasis on sustainability with the installation of a new, modern energy management system, which reduces the electricity consumption of store lighting and refrigeration programs. The new frozen food display cases will also feature anti-sweat heaters, reducing energy consumption.

As part of Tops’ pledge to partner with local businesses, the general contractor for the renovation project was R&P Oak Hill of Hamburg.
