TOPS FRIENDLY MARKETS EXECUTIVE HONORED BY BUSINESS FIRST OF BUFFALO AS CFO OF THE YEAR
WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – Kevin Darrington, Tops Friendly Markets’ chief financial officer, has been named CFO of the Year in the large company category by Business First of Buffalo. Tops is the leading full-service grocery retailer in Western New York, Central New York, including Rochester, and Northwestern Pennsylvania

Among many factors, Darrington was awarded for his contributions to the effort to return Tops to a locally based operation throughout 2008 and 2009. Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO nominated Darrington for his teamwork, knowledge, motivational skills and his immediate immersion into the Tops culture and his community once he joined the grocer in February 2008.

“Kevin defined the word ‘leader’ during the transition to bring Tops back to local management and he is very deserving of this recognition,” said Frank Curci, president and CEO of Tops. “Kevin oversaw many of the major changes we needed to implement across our organization and we are proud of the work he and his team completed in finishing the job on schedule and making it a seamless transition for our customers.”

Darrington led a team that worked over a 16-month period to establish a new information technology infrastructure from which each of the 71 Tops stores and corporate headquarters operate which led to the successful transition of Tops’ entire infrastructure from a large international conglomerate to an independent, freestanding operation without disrupting the customer experience.

His team was also instrumental in making the determination that Tops’ corporate headquarters should remain in the Buffalo area and expand, which led to the creation of more than 140 new jobs locally. Darrington played a key role in the development of Tops’ capital investment plan, which includes spending approximately $150 million dollars on store renovations, fuel outlets and the addition of seven to 10 new stores.

Tops associates have also credited Darrington for creating and sponsoring the Tops Bright Idea program, allowing associates to submit ideas to help grow and improve Tops.

Darrington, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., is a certified public accountant and has previously worked for Pathmark Stores, Inc., Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy, Inc. and Foot Locker, Inc. He earned a master’s in finance from Temple University along with a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University.

He and his family reside in Clarence, N.Y. where they are active in their church and many community and volunteer activities. Darrington is also a professional motivational keynote speaker.
