Williamsville, NY – Tops Friendly Markets, the leading full-service grocery retailer in Western New York, Central New York, including Rochester, and Northwestern Pennsylvania, today announced that the company will be opening its first new store since returning to a locally operated company. The store will be located at 27 Slayton Ave. in Spencerport, NY, the site of a former IGA store. The addition of the new location is part of Tops’ previously announced $150 million capital investment plan. The project is scheduled to start in March 2010 and is expected to be completed in summer, 2010. Tops will add as many as 100 new positions to operate the full-service grocery store. “With our capital improvement plan in place, it is first on our list of priorities is to invest in those communities where we have built lasting relationships and a strong customer base, and Monroe County and the greater Rochester area certainly fits that description.” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO. “The Village of Spencerport has been without a grocery store for five years, and village officials and residents have graciously opened their arms and welcomed us into their community. I have no doubt that Tops is the right fit, and that we’ll live up to our promise to provide our new neighbors with the widest variety of products at a great value, within a one-stop shopping experience.” The new facility is a testament to Tops’ ongoing and strong commitment to the Rochester area community, and its pledge to keep the company locally operated. The sale of Tops to Morgan Stanley Private Equity was completed on Dec. 3, 2007 and since that time, Curci and Tops management have transitioned its operations back to its headquarters in Williamsville, N.Y., created 140 new jobs there and has made it a priority to partner with businesses and vendors within the Tops service area. “Our partnerships with local vendors have been very rewarding, and have allowed us to pump millions in new money into the local economy over the past two years,” Curci said. “The Rochester area is very important to Tops, and is our priority to ensure that local dollars are kept in the area.” The Spencerport location will place a heavy local emphasis on its store shelves, Curci indicated. Customers will find an attractive selection of locally made products available as a result of new partnerships with area food vendors, including Tim Hortons coffee and bakery products, and Anchor Bar’s world-famous chicken wings made fresh inside Tops’ stores. The major renovation will include full-service deli, bakery, floral and seafood departments, a meat department, where meat is cut fresh daily, an ample produce department, dairy and frozen foods section, a natural and organic section, and Tops’ Carry Out Café where customers can find delicious prepared foods. The store will have six self check-out stations, a bottle redemption area, and customer service center for shoppers' convenience. Tops management is also focused on making the store as modern and energy efficient as possible with the most up-to-date energy management systems. Included in the renovation will be the addition of one of Tops’ first fueling stations in the Rochester area. Customers will be able to take advantage of Tops Gas BonusPoints program, whereby shoppers can use their BonusCard when they shop at their neighborhood Tops Friendly Markets and earn points on qualifying grocery and pharmacy purchases. Customers earn one Gas BonusPoint for every dollar they spend and can track their points at the bottom of their receipt. Customers can redeem these points by just scanning their BonusCard at a Tops gas pump for gas price discounts. Tops is a proud member and invests in every community it serves. With a mission focused around eradicating hunger and improving the quality of life for children, Tops will continue the tradition of giving back to its neighbors in the Spencerport community through a variety of sponsored programs.
