WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, celebrated today with 15 local communities the official grand-re-opening under the Tops brand banner of former stores operated by Penn Traffic. The new Tops branded stores include 14 former Quality Markets stores in Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania and one former P&C store in Elmira, NY. Participating in same-day celebration ceremonies at these stores were senior Tops company officials, district and store managers, and local community officials and charities. Ceremonies featured the announcement of capital improvements planned for each store as part of an overall two-year $90 million company-wide capital investment program, as well as donations made on behalf of Tops to various local charities through the company’s “Living Here. Giving Here” community partnership program. “The entire Tops team has worked very hard to ensure our new store customers will have a more enjoyable shopping experience as they see the many changes in the setting, amenities, friendly service and promotional grocery items that our neighborhood stores will offer,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO. “And we want to be active members of the local community.” Included among the store improvements planned that will vary by individual store, Curci said, are providing a wider variety and selection of favorite brand products, adding where needed bakery, deli, meat and healthy and organic food departments; introducing the popular Tim Hortons coffee service, and remodeling store exteriors and interiors. The Quality Markets and P&C stores were part of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court-approved acquisition of a majority of Penn Traffic’s assets by Tops that was completed on January 29, 2010. The name change of the stores to Tops Friendly Markets was included in a rebranding effort announced in early May in which all former stores owned by Penn Traffic would be changed to Tops through the end of 2010.
