Tops named “Official Supermarket of Syracuse Athletics”

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. –Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, announced today that it has teamed up with Syracuse University athletics to be the major sponsor of Syracuse University football, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s lacrosse for the next two seasons.

The sponsorship announcement comes just seven months after Tops increased its store holdings in Central New York with the acquisition of a majority of bankrupt Penn Traffic’s assets on January 29, 2010. Since that time, Tops has been working to transition all P&C stores to the Tops Friendly Markets brand name, as well as to extend its support to various community events and organizations.

“We have a special opportunity in the new neighborhoods we serve in Central New York to not only provide a better shopping experience to our customers, but to also make significant and lasting contributions in the community,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO. “We are excited to be able to show our support through the partnership we have created with Syracuse University athletics, and we look forward to showing enthusiastic Orange fans what Tops has to offer.”

Tops shoppers will play a major role in the two-year sponsorship by participating in exciting opportunities and ways to save through contests and special ad-driven promotions. Tops will also sponsor in-game promotions tied to the Tops BonusCard where customers can win prizes, including tickets to games and Tops gift cards. Shoppers will also be able to take advantage of discounted ticket programs and will find plenty of Orange “gear” and other merchandise in Tops stores.

“We are thrilled to have Tops in the Syracuse family and look forward to partnering with their professional way of doing quality business and touching the community with their quality products. Syracuse Athletics is proud to be joined with Tops,” said Dr. Daryl Gross, Syracuse University director of athletics.

As part of Tops commitment to the Central New York community and the company’s mission to help eradicate hunger, Tops will work with the Food Bank of Central New York through programs like “Touchdowns for Turkeys,” “Jams for Slams” and “Bins for Wins.” Tops will also sponsor a Family Corner, a special alcohol-free section at the Carrier Dome that provides families with a safe, comfortable spectator experience.

“We are proud to welcome Tops to our corporate partner family,” said Joe Baldini, general manager, Syracuse ISP Sports. “Tops has a long history of success and partnership with sports teams throughout their market footprint. This commitment to the community made for an attractive partner for Syracuse Athletics. Both customers of Tops and fans of the Orange will see benefits of the relationship as it continues to emerge. There are exciting things in the future for us as partners.”

Tops is also the “Official Supermarket of the Buffalo Bills.” Terms of the agreement, other than the duration, were not disclosed.

The sponsorship announcement was made during the Johnsonville Brats grilling event, which brought the “World’s Largest Grill” to the Tops store in Fayetteville, N.Y. The nationally renowned grill weighs in at almost 27 tons, measures 20 feet tall, 65 feet long, and can cook up to 2,500 brats per hour. As a part of The Big Taste Grill’s central New York stop, customers could purchase a brat, water and bag of chips for $4. All proceeds from the event went to the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation. The foundation strives to enrich the lives of kids in need within the Central New York community, as well as provide support for eliminating cancer through research advocacy
