TOPS MARKETS, LOCAL COMMUNITY CELEBRATE GRAND RE-OPENING OF OWEGO STORE UNDER NEW TOPS BANNER
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. –Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, celebrated today with the local community the official grand-re-opening under the Tops brand banner of the former P&C store at 1145 Route 17-C in Owego, NY.

The Owego store was one of eight locations participating in same-day grand re-opening celebrations with senior Tops company officials, district and store managers, and local community officials and charities.

Other stores and communities holding grand re-openings under the Tops brand banner were Norwich, NY; Watkins Glen, NY; Penn Yan, NY; Towanda, PA; Troy, PA; Canton, PA; and Wellsboro, PA.

Ceremonies featured the announcement of capital improvements planned for each store as part of an overall two-year $90 million company-wide capital investment program, as well as donations made on behalf of Tops to various local charities through the company’s “Living Here. Giving Here” community partnership program.

The Owego Fire Department, the Tioga County Rural Ministry, Tioga Opportunities Inc., the Boy Scouts of Tioga County, the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club, Inc., and the Bradford County Humane Society were selected as $500 donation recipients from the Owego Tops Friendly Markets.

“The entire Tops team has worked very hard to ensure that our new store customers will have a more enjoyable shopping experience as they see the many changes in the setting, amenities, friendly service and promotional grocery items that our neighborhood stores will offer,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO. “And we want to be active members of the local community.”

Included among the Owego store improvements are a wider variety and selection of favorite brand products, the introduction of the popular Tim Hortons coffee service, and new store exterior and interior décor.

The P&C store was part of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court-approved acquisition of a majority of Penn Traffic’s assets by Tops that was completed on January 29, 2010. The name change of the stores to Tops Friendly Markets was included in a rebranding effort announced in early May in which former stores owned by Penn Traffic – Quality Markets, P&C and BiLo -- would be changed to Tops by the end of 2010.
