WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in Western New York, Central New York, including Rochester, and Northwestern Pennsylvania, is ranked fifth on STORES’ recently published “Hot 100 Retailers list,” where they described Tops as being among 100 retailers “with unique business models – and those with both the means and the fortitude to expand while others contracted or stood pat.”

The article focuses on retailers that have “continued to add stores – either through new construction or acquisition – in spite of consumers’ marked lack of enthusiasm for shopping over the past 12 months.”

Tops Markets was ranked fifth on the list that was compiled for STORES by global research firm Kantar Retail. Rankings were determined by increases in domestic sales between 2009 and 2010; all retail companies with domestic sales in excess of $300 million were eligible. Hot 100 retailers managed average year-over-year domestic sales growth of 9.3 percent.

Tops Markets made the list after its acquisition of a majority of the former Penn Traffic Company’s assets, including 79 former Penn Traffic supermarket locations in January, 2010.

STORES is the official publishing group of NRF, the world’s largest retail trade association and the voice of retail worldwide. The publication can be found online at and the HOT 100 Retailers list can be found at
