TOPS NOT AFFECTED BY FRUIT FRESH UP, INC. VOLUNTARY RECALL OF CUT CANTALOUPE AND CUT MIXED FRUIT
WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, announced today it is not affected by Fruit Fresh Up, Inc. recent recall of cut cantaloupe and cut mixed fruit containing cantaloupe.

On October 6, 2011, Fruit Fresh Up, Inc. of Depew, New York announced that they are recalling approximately 4,800 individual packages of fresh cut cantaloupe and cut mixed fruit containing cantaloupe because they have the potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

L. monocytogenes is a bacterium that can contaminate foods and cause a mild non-invasive illness (called listerial gastroenteritis) or a severe, sometimes life-threatening, illness (called invasive listeriosis). Persons who have the greatest risk of experiencing listeriosis after consuming foods contaminated with L. monocytogenes are fetuses and neonates who are infected after the mother is exposed to L. monocytogenes during pregnancy, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems.

The Fruit Fresh Up, Inc. recall is part of a larger recall involving cantaloupe traced to Rocky Ford cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms in Holly, Colorado.

“Tops Markets does not receive whole, fresh cantaloupes from Jensen Farms. Tops produce associates cut fruit in-store daily, therefore our cut-fruit and mixed cut fruit remains unaffected as well by this recall,” said James DiMartino, Tops senior manager of regulatory, environmental services and food safety. “We understand that any recall can cause much concern for our customers. At Tops, food safety is a very high priority and we are committed to protecting the health of our customers.”
