TOPS MARKETS RAISES MORE THAN $47,100 FOR THE ROCHESTER FOODLINK DURING “FOOD FOR FAMILIES” DRIVE
2011 made record breaking year with the largest amount of food and money raised by Tops for Foodlink

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets in partnership with WROC-TV today announced the 2011 “Food for Families” annual food drive has raised $47,190 for the Rochester Foodlink.

“Helping to eradicate hunger in Rochester community is an important part of Tops’ core mission, and we are proud to provide Foodlink with a record breaking sum of food and monetary donation,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO. “Especially now when our neighbors need help the most, this annual event allows the entire community to be part of that mission.”

“‘The annual ‘Food for Families’ food drive provides much needed support and relief to Foodlink at a critical time of year,” said Tom Ferraro, Foodlink executive director and founder. “At Foodlink, we serve the community all year round and the support received from Tops through the year and through the annual ‘Food for Families’ drive generously aids our efforts.”

From Friday, December 2 through Friday, December 9, customers were encouraged to purchase “Little Brown Bags of Hope” for $5, $10 or $20. Sold at all greater Rochester Tops Friendly Markets locations throughout the week, the bags included a variety of food items needed by the Food Bank, including canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, rice, cereals and other non-perishable food items. All bags purchased throughout the week were donated to Foodlink.

The week culminated with a day-long outdoor food drive on Friday, December 9, where volunteers from Tops Friendly Markets, WROC-TV and Foodlink collected food and funds at four area Tops Friendly Markets.

Tops Friendly Markets proudly reaffirmed its mission of eradicating hunger by providing Foodlink with an additional donation of $5,000 in canned foods. The donation was made up of cans used in a “Canstruction” food structure with design and building generously donated by the Pike Company. The structure was designed in the shape of a treasure map with the theme being ‘X Marks the End of HunGARR.” Canstruction is an international charity where architects, engineers, contractors and students compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food.
