WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, today announced the start of its 2012 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) charitable campaign. The campaign will begin on Sunday, April 22 and will run until Saturday, May 12. Customers can donate to the foundation by purchasing paper sneakers for only $1.00 while checking out at any Tops Markets location. In addition to the paper sneakers, Tops stores will host hot dog sales, golf outings, walks, raffles and other fundraising events to raise money for the foundation.

“Helping to improve the quality of life for children is one of our missions in every community we serve,” said Frank Curci, Tops Markets president and CEO. “With the help of our associates and customers, we have been able to donate substantial funds for more than two decades, and we are committed to another successful campaign this year.”

In 1993, a Tops Markets associate designed the famous JDRF paper sneaker, and in the past 13 years of sneaker sales, more than $55.5 million has been raised by various companies who participate in the campaign. Tops’ 19-year corporate contribution to JDRF totals more than $7.2 million. Tops Markets has also been recognized as a “Top 15” donor to the International Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
