TOPS FRIENDLY MARKETS EXPANDS INTO CITY OF SYRACUSE
Tops’ new store in Valley Plaza will meet critical community needs, add 100 new jobs

Williamsville, NY – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in Western New York, Central New York, including Rochester, and Northern Pennsylvania, today announced that the company will expand into the City of Syracuse by opening a new store on the City’s South Side.

The new Tops store, the 133rd in the company, will be located at 4141 South Salina Street in Valley Plaza, currently vacant but the site of a P&C store in the past. Extensive renovations at the new location are part of Tops’ company-wide, multi-million dollar capital investment plan. Renovations of this 36,000 sq. ft. location are expected to be completed for an opening in late 2012. Tops will add as many as 100 new positions to operate the full-service grocery store.

“One of our highest priorities is to invest in those communities where the need for a grocery store is greatest.” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO.

“The South Side area in the City of Syracuse has been without a grocery store for three years and City officials and residents have graciously opened their arms and welcomed us into their community,” Curci said. “I have no doubt that Tops is the right fit, and that we’ll live up to our promise to provide our new neighbors with a wide variety of fresh food at an exceptional value, within a one-stop shopping experience.”

Tops is making its investment in this community with the support of Governor Cuomo’s Office, the Empire State Development Corporation, the City of Syracuse, and the Syracuse Industrial Development Agency. Funding from an Upstate City By City grant supporting the venture to open a supermarket at this location in the amount of $275,000 was approved by the state Public Authorities Control Board in late June.

“We are thrilled Tops is making this significant investment in Syracuse,” said Syracuse Mayor Stephanie A. Miner. “The new Tops store will be a welcome addition to our community, serving a critical need for access to quality, affordable food options.”

“The expansion of Tops to the South Side is great news for the health of the community, and also for our local family farmers and the regional economy,” said James Fayle, Central New York Regional Director for Empire State Development. “The collaboration between the City, SIDA, ESD and Tops proves that government and business can forge successful partnerships that create much-needed jobs and address local needs. I commend Frank Curci, Mayor Miner and SIDA for their efforts to make the South Side community, and the city of Syracuse, an even better place to live.”

Curci indicated that the new Syracuse facility is another example of Tops’ ongoing and strong commitment to the central New York community, and its pledge to keep the company locally operated. He added that Tops will pay special attention to the unique needs of the South Side community, including placing a heavy emphasis on local products, especially home grown produce, on store shelves at the Valley Plaza location.

The store will undergo a major renovation over the next several months that will include the addition of a full-service deli, bakery, floral and seafood departments, a meat department, where meat is cut fresh daily, an ample produce department, dairy and frozen foods sections, as well as a bulk section and Tops’ Carry Out Café where customers can find delicious prepared foods. The store will have six self check-out stations, a bottle redemption area, and customer service center for shoppers' convenience. Tops management is also focused on making the store as modern and energy efficient as possible with up-to-date energy management systems.
