Tops’ Corporate Wellness Program Supports Health and Wellness for Associates and their Families

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in Upstate New York, Northern Pennsylvania and Western Vermont, has been selected as a finalist for Western New York’s Healthiest Employers 2013 in the x-large company category. During an awards ceremony held today at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, Tops was honored for its dedication to providing the best health and wellness benefits for its associates.

Created by Healthiest Employers, a technology and data research company that collects, measures, and compares corporate wellness data worldwide, the Healthiest Employer awards program recognizes organizations that are committed to creating a healthy workplace. The award uses an online assessment tool to evaluate corporate wellness programming in six categories: culture and leadership commitment; foundational components; strategic planning; communication and marketing; programming and interventions; and reporting and analysis.

“Tops is committed to supporting the health and wellness of our associates, their families, and the communities we serve,” said Frank Curci, Tops Markets president and CEO. “Through our corporate wellness program, we are able to promote a healthier workforce and community while bringing a fun aspect to being healthy.”

Tops’ wellness committee works closely with company leaders to engage associates and their families in wellness programs throughout the calendar year. Partnering with health care providers, guest speakers, and experts in the wellness field, Tops sponsored more than 17 unique wellness activities, events, or challenges for its workforce last year alone.

One of the company’s most successful wellness programs was the “Lose to Win Challenge,” sponsored by the Amherst Chamber of Commerce and BlueCross BlueShield. Alongside Tops, the challenge included teams from Ingram Micro and AAA of Western and Central NY. Tops won the challenge with 215 associates from 23 teams, which lost a total of 2,025 pounds or 4.563 percent of their starting weight.

In the spring, Tops launched its “Walking Works Program” that encouraged associates and their families to get moving. During a four-week period, Tops provided pedometers and weekly prizes to 365 walkers who participate. More than 37,500 miles were walked while creating healthy competition among Tops’ stores and corporate offices.

To meet all associate needs, “The Wellness Evolution: Teammates in Health” – Tops’ signature wellness program – went on the road in the fall of 2012. During a one-month period, 93 percent of Tops’ benefit-eligible associates and their spouses were offered free biometric screenings and personal health assessments in the stores in which they work. In total, more than half of all Tops’ workforce took part in the program.

Other wellness activities in which Tops’ associates and their families participated in throughout 2012 included an at-work Weight Watchers program, the BlueCross BlueShield Association’s National Walk at Lunch Day, the Tops Olympic Experience held during the summer Olympics, and a “Maintain Don’t Gain” weight program launched during the holiday season. Tops was also the largest corporate group to take part in the three local Chase Corporate Challenges with more than 1,400 associates participating in the events held in Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.

“As your community’s ‘Better Health Store,’ Tops recognizes the value of a healthy lifestyle,” commented Curci. “By offering free and accessible programs to our associates and their families, we ensure health and wellness is a priority for the entire family – and our community as a whole.”
