Summer season brings increased need to help the hungry in WNY community

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Vermont, in partnership with Ronzoni, today presented the Food Bank of Western New York (WNY) with 192,000 servings (43,000 pounds) of pasta, enabling the Food Bank of WNY to help address the increasing need for hunger relief in the community.

Tops’ President and CEO Frank Curci, Food Bank of WNY President and CEO Marylou Borowiak and representatives from agencies the Food Bank serves were on hand to discuss this significant donation as well as the state of hunger in the WNY community.

“Helping to eradicate hunger is the lead component of our community mission,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO. “We are dedicated to assisting food banks within our areas, and along with our partners at Ronzoni and New World Pasta, we are proud to present this significant product donation.”

The Food Bank of WNY has realized an increase of 15 percent in need for food from its 330 member agencies in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties since Nov. 1 when Federal cuts in the food stamp program went into effect. For the 2014 calendar year, the Food Bank of WNY is on target to distribute a record 15.5 million pounds of food to its member agencies which are now serving more than 36,000 families in the four counties, including 43,000 children.

“We are so grateful to Tops Friendly Markets and Ronzoni for this wonderful healthy donation. Our families in need appreciate meals that can be stretched like pasta plus it’s easy to prepare and it is a favorite among children,” said Marylou Borowiak, President and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY.

On Thursday, Tops and Ronzoni also donated a pasta lunch at the Food Bank for students from the Stanley G. Falk School (participants in the Food Bank’s Kids in the Kitchen program) as well as children from the Valley Community Early Pre-K program. Food Bank staff provided tours of the facility and community garden after the pasta lunch.
