TOPS MARKETS, BLACKROCK COMMUNITY CELEBRATE MAJOR RENOVATION OF AMHERST STREET STORE
Store adapts to changing city community as part of overall $5 million commitment, investment in City

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Vermont, today announced the completion of a major renovation of its Amherst St. store, located in the City of Buffalo, to meet the changing fabric of the local neighborhood. The renovation is part of Tops’ overall $5 million investment in its City of Buffalo locations, which includes two additional store renovations to be completed by January 2015.

The Tops store located at 345 Amherst St., in the heart of the Blackrock community, underwent a $3 million renovation, including the addition of a fuel station that opened in December.

“The Blackrock landscape is changing with a vibrant mix of newer and older residents, and continues to be a unique and very important part of Buffalo,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ president and CEO. “We are always listening to our customers and neighbors and have made significant changes and improvements at our Amherst St. location based on that feedback.”

The new amenities and changes at the 54,779-square-foot store focus on giving local shoppers more product variety, in an overall enhanced store setting. The renovation includes an expansion of Hispanic, German, Kosher and other international foods to meet the grocery needs of the Blackrock community. Approximately 1,500 new products have been introduced throughout the entire Amherst St. location, offering shoppers an expanded selection of local, national and Tops brand products.

The store also created a renovated produce section with an increased variety of fresh and organic products with new décor throughout the section. 300 varieties of craft beer can be found at the store, making the Amherst Street Tops the largest selection of local, domestic and imported beer of all Tops locations.

The store also has an increased emphasis on security, which is something customers

To date, 30 jobs have been created at the Amherst St. store so that more Tops associates will contribute to an exceptional shopping experience for customers, and at least 10 additional jobs will be added before the end of this year.

“Being a full-service grocery store with a true neighborhood feel is something we’ve prided ourselves on in this community for more than 20 years,” said Jay Knavel, store manager at the Amherst St. Tops. “From having the right products on our shelves, to giving directly back to our community, we want our neighbors to be comfortable and feel good about shopping at Tops.”

In addition to the Amherst St. Tops location, Buffalo residents will see major changes at two other Tops stores in the coming months. The Tops Markets located at 1460 South Park Ave. and 1770 Broadway will both undergo changes to make for an easier and better shopping experience. The investments at these locations will total $2 million.

Tops Committed to the City of Buffalo.

“Buffalo is a diverse community and the city’s landscape is changing, physically and culturally,” Curci said. We have a responsibility to continue to provide our neighbors with the services and products they need. We hire from within our community, give back to neighborhoods we in which operate, and we design our stores to fit the specific needs of the surrounding area. That’s the way we’ve operated for nearly 53 years, and that is what we’ll continue to do.”

Seven Tops Markets stores are located in the city of Buffalo, two of which are owned and operated by Tops’ franchise partners. The sizes of these stores range from 11,138 to 55,822 square feet and at these locations alone, Tops employs approximately 1,000 associates and serves tens of thousands of customers daily. During the 2014 year Tops stores in the City of Buffalo have also given back significantly to local charitable and non-profit organizations.
