THREE ERIE COUNTY TOPS STORES TO CLOSE PHARMACY DEPARTMENTS
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Tops Friendly Markets, a leading full-service grocery retailer in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Vermont, announced today that it will close pharmacy departments in three Erie County stores to reinvest in its stores and use the additional space to offer shoppers more product choices. The pharmacy department closings at stores in Williamsville, East Aurora and Springville, will be effective later this month. This transition is part of an agreement whereby Tops will close pharmacy departments in 27 of its 162 locations and transfer customer scripts and inventory to five CVS/Pharmacy and 22 Rite Aid locations near each affected store. The transaction accounts for less than 20 percent of the company’s prescription volume and Tops will continue to serve customers from 52 pharmacy locations within its network of stores.

The pharmacy departments that will be closing within Tops stores in Erie County include: Tops Markets Pharmacy, located at 65 Grey Street, East Aurora Prescription files will be transferred to the Rite Aid pharmacy located at 190 Main Street in East Aurora

Tops Markets Pharmacy located at 184 South Cascade, Springville Prescription files will be transferred to the Rite Aid pharmacy located at 40 W. Main Street in Springville

Tops Markets Pharmacy located at 5274 Main Street, Williamsville Prescription files will be transferred to Rite Aid pharmacy located at 5447 Main Street in Williamsville

Tops and Rite Aid are working together closely to ensure the transition will be as seamless as possible for customers.

“Tops does not have a one size fits all approach to our stores, which means our neighborhood locations vary greatly by size and offering,” said Frank Curci, Tops’ chairman, president and CEO. “Space inside some of our supermarkets is at a premium and some of our locations are not filling enough prescriptions to make the most efficient use of our resources. A business decision was made to close out select pharmacy departments.”

In the available pharmacy spaces, Tops will continue expanding its offerings in health products, beauty products, fresh food, deli and other product areas. Customers will have more access to a wider selection of products, while still having a conveniently located outlet for their prescription needs.

“This transition allows us to better focus on what Tops does best: providing our customers with the widest selection of what they want most, at the price that gives them the most value,” Curci added. “Across our stores, customers tell us they love and want more options that busy, healthy families need today – like fresh produce, prepared foods, natural organics and other health and wellness options. We are committed to western New York and this transition will allow us to reinvest back into our stores and give customers more of what they want from Tops.”

Tops will continue to serve customers from its 52 remaining pharmacy locations, 24 of which are located in Erie County, and the company will include new pharmacies in selected supermarkets as part of the company’s growth and expansion. Since this transition affects only three out of 34 Tops stores located in Erie County, most customers will not see any changes in their Tops supermarket experience.
