Williamsville, NY… Tops Friendly Markets recently announced that Joe Arcuri, a perishable field specialist in Northeast Ohio, has been named one of two recipients of the "Armand J. Castellani Outstanding Achievement Award."

The Castellani Award is named in memory and in honor of Armand J. Castellani, Tops' co-founder who passed away in 2002, and is Tops’ equivalent of a “lifetime achievement award’ - given to an associate who has demonstrated an outstanding record of contribution to Tops. Recipients must display honesty and equity towards others, and have encouraged a cooperative spirit for all Tops associates and family. The recipient must also prove a sense of worth is measured less by his own achievements but more by what he enabled others to realize.

Arcuri, who has been in the grocery industry for nearly 50 years, began his career with Pick-N-Pay, which later became Finast and ultimately part of the Tops Friendly Markets chain. He started as a part-time clerk in 1954 while still attending high school. Early in his career, Arcuri held a full-time position as produce manager, and in 1969, was promoted to produce supervisor in charge of 12 stores in eastern Cleveland. Throughout his career, Arcuri held positions as a deli specialist, carryout and restaurant specialist, cheese specialist, and bakery specialist, and also served as a district manager for Pick-N-Pay stores.

Colleagues regard Arcuri as an excellent teacher and mentor. At regional meetings, he has established a tradition of presenting the "Produce Tip of the Month", born when a regional VP asked him to talk about produce promotions for the fall. Arcuri gave an informative speech about pumpkins, providing information on their history and folklore, in addition to proper handling and merchandising techniques. The lesson was so well received that Arcuri was asked to talk about another product at the next meeting, and has since given presentations on a variety of other produce items.

Outside of his career, Arcuri, a resident of Bedford, OH, enjoys spending time with his wife, Christine, and their 2 grandchildren, Nathan and Alexander. He also enjoys the outdoors.
