TOPS FRIENDLY MARKETS OPENS FULL-SCALE SUPERMARKET ON JEFFERSON AVENUE
Williamsville, NY… Tops Friendly Markets and the City of Buffalo celebrated a landmark day in the economic development of the city’s East Side when the newest Tops, located at 1275 Jefferson Avenue, opened for business at 8:00 a.m. today. The 29,000 square foot store is the first full-scale supermarket to serve the Jefferson Avenue community in several decades.

The much-anticipated supermarket creates 110 new jobs and fulfills the community's need for convenient and affordable grocery shopping within the immediate neighborhood. Local government and community leaders anticipate the new Tops will lead to further development of the Jefferson Avenue business district. It is the second new Tops to open in the City of Buffalo this year.

"Today's opening is a great example of the public and private sectors coming together for the common good of our great city, said Buffalo Mayor Anthony M. Masiello. “We are confident that this project will have a significant economic impact and lead to further economic development opportunities for the East Side. While I want to thank Tops for exemplifying good corporate citizenship, I also want to acknowledge the hardworking people from the city's economic development department who worked so hard with Tops to make this project a reality."

"Time-and-time again the residents of Buffalo's East Side have called for a major supermarket right here in their own neighborhood, said Eire County Executive Joel A. Giambra. “I'm pleased that my administration was able to commit $100,000 towards the building of this new market and for the first time since an A&P Market occupied this very same corner during the 1960s there will now be a supermarket on Buffalo's East Side."

“We’re very excited to be opening this new store,” said Max Henderson, Tops’ executive vice president and general manager. “Local residents voiced their desire for a full-scale supermarket offering convenience, quality and value. They expressed the need for jobs and an opportunity for economic growth. We feel that we’ve managed to fulfill all of those needs, and invite other businesses to follow our lead.”

The Jefferson Avenue Tops features a full grocery selection including fresh meat and seafood, Walter's Garden produce and Baker's Oven bakery. Throughout the planning process, Tops worked closely with the community to help determine the product mix of the new store, reflected by the inclusion of many ethnic and specialty foods within each department such as Camellia’s smoked meats, Allen’s canned goods, Glory Foods and the Sylvia’s line of products.

In addition to traditional grocery, the store also includes a CarryOut Café, a Pharmacy – complemented by a Relax, Renew, Revive health and beauty selection, and a Charter One in-store bank branch. The store also offers an array of services including check cashing, money orders, Western Union transfers and New York State Lottery. An enclosed recycling area at the front of the store provides convenient access to eight container return machines. Tops Markets, LLC is one of six retail operating companies under Ahold USA, one of the leading supermarket operations in the U.S. Tops currently operates 160 Tops Friendly Markets, 205 convenience stores under the Wilson Farms, Sugarcreek and Tops Xpress banners, and 8 B-Kwik Food Markets in New York, Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio.
