Williamsville, NY& September is National Food Safety Education Month, and area Tops Friendly Markets are offering fun and educational ways to drive home the importance of food safety to customers and their families. Parents can take a colorful approach to teaching their children proper food handling - ideal for preparing school lunches - by taking advantage of Tops coloring contest and activity sheets.

Throughout September, while supplies last, customers can stop by the Customer Service Desk to pick up food safety coloring sheets and activity sheets. The coloring sheets deliver a fun message about proper food handling practices, and can be returned to the store for entry into the Food Safety Month Coloring Contest. The activity sheet challenges children to practice proper food safety by teaching them the four Fight Bac! messages: clean; separate; cook and chill. Along with fun activities for children, the sheets contain valuable back-to-school food safety tips for parents.

In addition, every Saturday in September, the Cuyahoga County Health Department will conduct a "Hand Washing Olympics" station at the Tops locations at 7919 Day Drive in Parmatown and 22501 Shore Center Road in Euclid. Customers can stop by the hand wash station anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to "try their hand" at proper hand washing. The health department will use a special light to demonstrate the difference between proper and improper hand washing.

To celebrate this year's theme of "Store It, Don't Ignore It", which focuses on the important procedures necessary for storing food safely, all Tops locations will feature educational in-store displays. Additional food safety reference materials are available to consumers on Tops' website,, by contacting the USDAs Meat & Poultry Hotline at 1-800-535-4555, or by visiting
