Williamsville, N.Y. –Tops Friendly Markets is pleased to once again partner with New York Beef Council to continue to educate a wide variety of audiences about the many benefits of beef as part of its ongoing educational series. From registered dietitian groups, to food bloggers and family and consumer science educators, to other professional groups involved in food and wellness, TOPS has welcomed a wide variety of organizations to their stores for hands on educational sessions.

The New York Beef council conducts sessions that consist of 10-20 participants with trainings being conducted several times throughout the year. Recently organizations including Genesee Dietetic Association, the CNY Dietetic Association, and CNY Family & Consumer Science professional groups have offered this training as membership education experiences for their students. Each participant in the program receives the Shopper Guidance Training Guide and Dietitians can also earn up to two Continuing Professional Education Units from the training. While this particular program is currently concentrated in the Central New York, Rochester, and Orange County area, organizers offer this program throughout New York State.

“We have been partnering with TOPS since 2007, bringing to the forefront NY Beef Council’s mission to enhance consumers’ lives by connecting them with beef,” said Cindy Chan Phillips, RD, director of nutrition education for New York Beef Council. “We are always open to opportunities to help the public eat nutritiously with beef.”

The training focuses on the needs of the public and to help them with meal solutions. Participants learn to examine the lifestyle and wellness needs of individuals whether it be for heart-healthy eating, weight loss, more energy, cooking for a busy family and so forth. At the beef case section of the stores, participants are shown the popular beef cuts which would be the best meal solutions for their needs. TOPS Meat Manger, Lisa Goodnow at the Baldwinsville store, was also on hand at the most recent training, serving as the expert in the field, to answer any questions that the group had on the cuts of meat, and varieties that TOPS carries. The participants also learn the 10 nutrients from beef that are important for the needs of different age groups, whether they are families with small children, active student athletes or the elderly. The program reviews purchasing and food safety tips and explains how beef packages are usually laid out on the shelves. To gain additional confidence and knowledge, participants learn the popular beef cuts through the seasons of winter cooking, spring fresh, summer grilling or fall entertaining. Additionally those engaged in the program discuss the meaning behind grass-fed, brand name, and organic labels.

“TOPS have been working closely with the New York Beef Council for over a decade, said Jim Lane, director for meat and seafood for TOPS Friendly Markets. “Our work together has included not only these educational sessions for area dieticians, but also meat manager certification classes and meat manager meetings where alternative meat cutting techniques were demonstrated. We’re pleased to work in partnership with the Beef Council as together we provide valuable informational programs to not only our associates, but to the community at large.”
