AmeriCorps and YouthBuild members, students, and community volunteers will mobilize to turn Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action. Volunteers will work together to collect canned/non-perishable goods from the front porch of each household in the Village of Hamburg. Through the committed support of Tops, Town of Hamburg residents can also participate on Monday, January 21, 2019 by making a donation of canned/non-perishable goods at participating Tops locations in Hamburg and Boston, NY (S. 6150 South Park Avenue, Hamburg, NY 14075, 4250 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg, NY 14075, 7375 Boston State Rd, North Boston, NY 14110). Donations in support of the MLK Day 2019 Hamburg Food Drive will only be accepted at these Tops locations on Monday, January 21, 2019 between 9:00 am-1:00 pm. Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live—creating the Beloved Community. Dr. King preached that “Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." This grassroots-driven volunteer project has evolved into a community-wide event. Over the past six years, the MLK Day Food Drive has generated over 41,000 lbs. of donated non-perishable items and canned goods benefitting the Food Bank of WNY, Inc. The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. That service may meet a tangible need, or it may meet a need of the spirit. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and create solutions. ###

The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. and The Service Collaborative creates opportunities for all individuals to serve their communities, challenging them to turn their ideals into action and their passion into positive change. Through transformational service and civic responsibility, we are designing a sustainable future for our nation’s communities. In collaboration with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County, TSC created VolunteerWNY, an effort to connect volunteers and community organizations across Western New York. This collaboration led to the development of, WNY’s premier website for volunteer connection. In 2018, TSC created another arm of VolunteerWNY focused on the needs of community organizations addressing the root causes of hunger in our communities. For more information visit and Western New York YouthBuild Program at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. YouthBuild is an alternative educational program that offers individuals ages 16-24 training and practical experience for "in-demand" industry careers through community revitalization projects, while also working to earn a GED certificate. Most program participants have been in the juvenile justice system, are aging out of foster care, are high school dropouts, and/or are otherwise at-risk of failing to reach key educational milestones and opportunities that lead to career fulfillment. Participants join the YouthBuild program because they are looking to transform their lives and roles in society.
