Williamsville, N.Y. – Memorial Day is FINALLY here after what seemed like an endless rainy and dreary spring and at Tops we’re ready to kick-off the summer season! It’s time to fire up the grill with some colossal burgers and savory sausages, break out those berries that are bursting with flavor that we’ve been waiting all winter for, and dive into some delicious desserts this holiday weekend as we honor those who have served our country.

Amidst all of the celebrating, we encourage you to take a moment to pause and reflect on the significance of this holiday and share some important Memorial Day facts as a way of paying tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice:

• This year marks the 151st year that the United States will be celebrating this time honored tradition. • Memorial Day did not become an official Federal holiday however until 1971. • Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. • Memorial Day was initially called Decoration Day following the Civil War. It was called this by General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, because it did not honor any one particular battle. • In 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.
